On February 20th, the fifteen winners of the VII edition of the Ópera XXI Awards were announced.
These awards recognize the outstanding work of singers, musical directors and stage directors of Spanish, Portuguese or Latin American nationalities, as well as initiatives to recover the Spanish lyrical heritage of Spanish theaters, festivals and stable seasons of opera and zarzuela, for their contribution to opera activity during the 2023-2024 season.
We are particularly pleased to learn the Best Singer Award (female category) has been for mezzo-soprano Silvia Tro Santafé, for her interpretation of the role of Elisabetta in Donizetti's opera Maria Stuarda, at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia in December 2023, and the Best Young Singer Award which went to baritone Jan Antem, for his participation in Menotti's The Telephone and L'Amour à Trois at the Perelada Festival in August 2023 and for his interpretation of Dancaïre in Bizet's opera Carmen, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in January 2024.
